2024 Projects

The BegInning of MaxMAD

What started as a study break between finals last year has turned into my biggest and favorite project to date. After drawing a few fish using posca pens, I dropped the sketch for months. That following summer, I became increasingly more intrigued with adobe illustrator, so I set forth to learn it. After dabbling in the software for a bit I had the bright idea to vectorize my own sketches. I started with the orange goldfish (pictured on the left) and then branched out to a collection of four different fish from my previous sketch. As a marketing major and aspiring creative, I’m always thinking- “how can I market myself, better yet my work?”. well, I figured I gotta put it in front of everyone’s face!

I started with a plan. Titled - “the beginning of MADmAx”. Madmax, is a concept name I’ve always personally used to describe my own brand/image and plan on using for my own personal brand in the future.

I wanted to test marketing my own designs for this project. So, I decided to order my newly digitized designs as stickers and place them everywhere on campus (in a non-destructive way), and so I did. i hid them everywhere, on street signs, poles, bathroom stalls, under desk, water fountains. My goal was, I want people to start to recognize these, even if thats subconscious, i dont care. I want to test if the public still pays attention enough to notice small art hidden around them.In order to afford this project i even got a job as a server at a nearby mexican restaurant. This was meant to last till i graduate, every time i go to class i bring a few stickers to hide with me. it’s fun. I’ve also branched out with other side project using the stickers, such as another skateboard.

The creative process:

SKATEBOARD DECK

Back in September, a friend of mine at the time was creating her own skateboard art piece. It had been a year now since I had learned to skateboard abroad and it was something I continually practiced and still do, so naturally I was like- “I need to make my own”. I didn’t plan it out too much, I kinda just let me brain roam. It took me around ~7, maybe 8 weeks, mainly because I’d hit a creative wall every other day and not know what to do next. This project really highlighted the importance of planning bigger pieces just because when doing so I don’t hit a wall wondering where to go next. It was a fun first “big project” and it also highlighted the importance of discipline, especially when doing side-projects. I like how it turned out (kinda- lowkey stared at it too much) but this project taught me more going forward than anything. I’m excited for my next project!
